Is there a dress code for the National Theatre? ›

There's no specific dress code for the National Theatre. In general, London theatre etiquette suggests that casual or 'smart casual' clothing is fine for spectators.

Outgoing Kiln Theatre artistic director Indhu Rubasingham will follow in the footsteps of Norris, Nicholas Hytner, Trevor Nunn, Richard Eyre, Peter Hall and Laurence Olivier to lead the NT: she will take over in spring 2025 after a lengthy handover period that will see her join as director designate from spring 2024.

The simple answer here is anything. From a casual t-shirt, jeans and trainers to a tuxedo or formal dress, there are no dress codes. You could turn up to the theatre wearing anything and be permitted entry.

The largest of the National's three theatres, the Olivier, is built in the style of an amphitheatre with a fan-shaped auditorium. It has seating for about 1,100 people on two levels: Stalls and Circle. To reach either level, use one of the four lifts from the main foyer on the Ground Floor, as directed by our staff.

The theatre presents a varied programme, including Shakespeare, other international classic drama, and new plays by contemporary playwrights. Each auditorium in the theatre can run up to three shows in repertoire, thus further widening the number of plays which can be put on during any one season.

Cheaper seats can be found towards the front of the Stalls and in the seats at the ends of rows, which are severely angled towards the stage. These seats are completely unobstructed, but the best views are in the centre, higher up in the Stalls. There is no overhang, but there is limited legroom.

Casual attire is acceptable, but feel free to dress up. To ward off air-co chill, bring sweaters or jackets. Arrive early. Thirty minutes is ideal.

Don't forget comfortable shoes, as you'll be on your feet or walking around the city before and after the performance. In this case it's all about context. Special black tie events and opening nights will usually call for formal attire, while you should feel free to dress casually for the average Broadway or matinee show, or for more conceptual dramas like those put on by black box theaters.
