Breastfeeding Support and Help
Hey all!I see that bottles have all different kinds of nipple flows and I thought I would need them in all the sizes as baby grows, however, my SIL told me that's not true if I'm going to continue nursing as well. She said:"All of the feeding specialists at the hospital told us to only use the original size nipple as long as we wanted to continue nursing..."Can anyone weigh in on this? (By "original size nipple" she's referring to the size that comes with the bottles, the low flow 0 or 1).

Yup, smallest size possible unless you yourself have overactive letdown. You don't want baby to find the bottle easier than the breast and move towards preferring it as a result.

Interesting!! I never knew this. This is my third baby but first time with bottles. This actuality makes things easier (less stuff to keep track of lol).
So we started that way but around 5 months or so my baby really started struggling with the slow flow nipples to the point that he just wouldn't finish bottles because he was so frustrated which worried me because I work full time and wanted to make sure he was getting enough. So we went up to the next flow and he's finishing bottles again. It has had no impact on breastfeeding, he still prefers the breast.

Good to know. I guess each baby is different and I just have to wait and see. Thank you.

We also did the slowest flow for a long time, but did get to size 2 at some point (don't remember when) when baby seemed to be getting frustrated with the smallest size. We only went up to 2 though, never needed faster than that.

I use size 1 for my 10 mo old. We tried size two and she was drowning in her milk. She’s happy with size 1
I stayed with size 1 the whole time, except for a random size 3 that came home from daycare at some point. DS started daycare at 7 months and it was around 9 months that I noticed the different size. I never heard anything about him struggling with it or preferring it, though if there was a difference his teachers wouldn’t know the reason so 🤷♀️.
