Final Fantasy 14 has many mounts that are difficult to obtain, but some legendary ones can be easier to acquire than players might think. This is the case with the Kirin mount, which has some of the game's nicest effects despite being launched years ago as A Realm Reborn's reward for players who completed Extreme Trials and acquired specific loot.

While players can choose how challenging they want to make the process of getting this mount, it can be quite simple due to the difference in level created by Final Fantasy 14's natural progression as more expansions have been added. As a result, there is an easy way to add a very cool mount to your collection, and here is everything you need to know to get it.

The first thing players will need to be able to get Kirin is to reach at least level 50. To get it the easy way, though, it will be necessary to reach a higher level, which is advised, as currently it might not be as easy to do the necessary content through Duty Finder or Party Finder. To complete it unsynced, the minimum recommended would be level 70, but anything above that will make the process even easier.

It will also be necessary to finish the Main Scenario Quests in A Realm Reborn up to "Let Us Cling Together." While some of the other necessary content unlock quests will be available before, this is the last MSQ that must be completed for all the necessary content to be available.

Once the player has achieved the requirements, every other necessary quest can be unlocked following a certain order. The first is a level 50 content unlock quest (marked with a blue symbol) called "A Recurring Problem," which can be picked up with Minfilia (X: 6.9, Y: 6.1) at the Waking Sands, inside the Solar. The player can complete it after reaching the necessary point in the Main Scenario to be able to unlock every subsequent necessary quest, but it will be available as soon as the MSQ "The Ultimate Weapon" is done. The Scions of the Seventh Dawn will explain that the beast tribes are summoning their gods once more, which will start a quest chain that leads the players to face primals again.

After that, the player must accept "Ifrit Bleeds, We Can Kill It," a quest given by Thancred (X: 6.1, Y: 5.1) — also at the Waking Sands — but this time in the spacious room where a merchant is available, as shown on the map above. After The Bowl of Embers (Hard) is cleared, the quest "In For A Garuda Awakening" can be picked up with Papalymo (X: 6.1, Y: 5.0) at the Waking Sands again. The Howling Eye (Hard) will be cleared to complete the quest, leading to "In a Titan Spot" being available with Y'shtola (X:6.1, Y:5.1) — also at the Waking Sands — which players will have to clear to unlock the quest "Primal Nature," found with Urianger (X: 6.0, Y: 4.9) in the same room as the others.

Even if the player progresses the story enough for the Scions to have moved to the Rising Stones, the NPCs needed for those quests can still be found in the Waking Sands.

Unlock The Extreme Versions Of The Trials

The next step is to unlock the Extreme versions of these A Realm Reborn trials. "Gale-force Warning" can be picked up from Vorsaile Heuloix (X: 9.7, Y: 11.1) in New Gridania, followed by "Quake Me Up Before You O'Ghom*oro" and "Ifrit Ain't Broke," both picked up with Urianger in the Waking Sands.

The trials featuring Leviathan (The Whorleater), Ramuh (The Striking Tree), and Shiva (The Akh Afah Amphitheatre) will be unlocked throughout the Main Scenario, and they will all have been completed by the time the player reaches the last necessary MSQ, "Let Us Cling Together."

Players must then unlock the Extreme versions of these trials through the quests:

  • "Whorl of a Time" - Available after MSQ "Through the Maelstrom" is completed; can be found with Urianger (X: 6.0, Y: 4.9) at the Waking Sands.
  • "Judgment Bolts and Lightning" - Available after MSQ "Brave New Companions" is completed; can be picked up from Scarlet (X: 9.9, Y: 11.4) in New Gridania.
  • "Drop Dead Shiva" - Available after MSQ "Let Us Cling Together" is completed; starts with Urianger (X: 6.0, Y: 4.9) at the Waking Sands.

It's important to know that completing those quests demands clearing the trials in the EX version. Currently, it is not advised that players do it through the Duty Finder, as this content is more difficult and requires more player coordination. Doing it through the Party Finder, however, can also be troublesome — on top of it not being as common to find parties focused on completing ARR trials. So, while it is possible to complete those trials in the original difficulty, this method is not advised.

Instead, it's recommended players level up to at least level 70 so they can complete the trials in an Unrestricted Party, meaning their level and items are not synced to the instance. In this mode, they can group up with other players, but it's simple and fast to solo the trials, even at level 70.

At level 90, it can take as little as 40 seconds to complete the fight against Garuda, for example.

Completing all the quests will be necessary to get the Kirin mount, but doing the trials once likely won't be enough. That is because the point is not clearing the trials in itself: the player will need to acquire the mounts each of them drops. It isn't guaranteed they will appear among the loot, regardless of how many people are in the party, but it takes little time to acquire them, considering the trials can be cleared in a few minutes (depending on the player's level).

Required Mounts To Unlock The 'A Legend For A Legend' Quest

For the quest to unlock Kirin to be available, the player will have to obtain:

The Howling Eye EX, The Navel EX, and The Bowl of Embers EX have a smaller chance to drop the Nightmare mount. Although its model is similar to the other mounts, the Nightmare is not required to get Kirin — but trying to get the other horses can be a good opportunity to also try to farm it.

Once the player has collected every mount listed above, the quest "A Legend For A Legend" will be unlocked. It can be picked up in Mor Dhona, inside Seventh Heaven, by talking to the Wandering Minstrel (X: 21.8, Y: 8.7). He will speak of a legend he heard from an ancient hermit, believing the Warrior of Light might be the one it referred to due to their mastery of magical mounts. As a result, he will give the player a Far Eastern instrument, the Magicked Dizi, and direct them to Rathefrost, where the instrument should be used.

Once the player uses the instrument, a brief cutscene will show all the horses reunited when Kirin appears. Having conquered the legendary mount's loyalty, the player will proceed to complete the quest, being rewarded with the Kirin Fife — the item used to acquire the Kirin mount. Using it will also grant players the achievement "Ichiban."
