In a terrific article published today in Ear & Hearing, Larry Humes uses NHANES data to show that there are some 49.5 million adults—about 22% of US adults ages 20 or older—with mild-to-moderate hearing loss who may be candidates for OTC hearing aids. About 40-45% of OTC hearing aid candidates are 50-69 years old, and three-quarters are ages 40-79. Although data was limited on family income, available statistics suggest about 18% of OTC candidates had annual family incomes less than $20,000, 32% had incomes of $75,000 or more, and the remainder, about 50%, fell between these two extremes. Over 70% of OTC hearing-aid candidates did not use prescription hearing aids or other devices, and over 50% had not had their hearing tested in the past 5 years. #hearingloss #hearingaids #OTC #audiology #hearinghealth

The Apple Hearing Study conducted by University of Michigan researchers has found that about 15% of participants experience tinnitus constantly and about 36% of people age 55+ constantly experience tinnitus. While the majority report their tinnitus as faint, 34% say it's noticeable, and 9% report it's very loud or ultra loud. About 10% of participants report that their “tinnitus has moderately or entirely interfered with their ability to hear clearly.” #tinnitus #hearingloss #hearingaids #audiology #hearinghealth

Cool new AI audio tech is being developed by a University of Washington team in Seattle. They've developed an AI headphone that lets you look at a person speaking for 3-5 seconds to "enroll" them. It then employs "Target Speech Hearing," canceling other sounds in the environment and playing just the enrolled speaker's voice in real-time—even as the listener moves around in a noisy setting. Cochlear Ltd has acquired Oticon Medical's Neuro cochlear implant system from Demant for a zero headline price. Regulatory concerns blocked the sale of Oticon Medical's bone-anchored hearing systems.
