#275122 Sure appears that NJT NEED's TO recruit more engineers and conductors, as well as bus drivers. Or are they having $$$$ problem's in their budget? D. #275124 NJ Transit's state support was dramatically reduced during the eight years of Governor Christie's tenure, resulting in a fare increase, reduced spare parts inventories, deferred maintenance, few new engineers being trained (the problem is mainly a shortage of engineers) and a salary freeze on crew members. A significant number have left for Metro-North, LIRR, SEPTA, and even Florida's Tri-Rail and especially startup of Brightline. Salaries were as much as 27% higher, according to one news report I read! Deferred maintenance and lack of spare parts result in trains having in-service mechanical problems rather then being fixed when scheduled to prevent problems. Shortage of engineers means there are few, if any, replacements available. NJT says it take 20 months to train an engineer, so a complete end of the shortage would be nearly two years off - if they could start training enough people NOW. I do not think they are doing that, unfortunately. I don't know if the bus driver shortage is as severe, but the starting salary is about $17 per hour and I see hiring ads on NJT buses, including the minibuses used for accessible services. State support has been increased under new Governor Murphy, but much more is needed and the state budget is still stressed. Both politial parties have kicked the can down the road for decades on many issues and stopgap measures have been used to avoid actually addressing them. Gary R.
